What could be better to start my blog than talking about one of the most exciting things to happen in the Hi Fi industry in many years, Linn digital streaming, or DS.
Here is why I think Linn DS is so exciting. I have worked in this industry as a music lover since the mid 70’s. I began selling and setting up high-end turntables over 30 years ago and the LP12 almost 30 years ago. The level of musical enjoyment from the Rega and Linn turntables I’ve been selling ever since is wonderful. When the compact disc appeared the challenge for my turntable customers and myself was finding a cd player that gave us as much musical enjoyment as we got from our turntables. And that’s been the challenge ever since. Over the years that level of enjoyment from the compact disc has improved considerably, but as soon as you play an LP12, it becomes obvious the gap is still large.
I had been using the very high end Linn Unidisk 1.1 to play my cd’s for many years when I purchased my first Linn DS player, the Akurate DS. After setting it up and ripping my first cd it only took a few seconds to realize that the level of improvement was very significant. All of the hi fi improvements were very obvious, much more detail, much smoother highs, and tighter, deeper bass. The biggest difference however was the fact that the musical enjoyment was at a whole new level. I had never heard music sound so rhythmic and tuneful from a digital source! The convenience of being able to choose music from any computer in the house or my ipod is a huge bonus. Finally I can listen to whatever music I feel like listening to with no regard to whether it is digital or analogue and I get the same level of musical enjoyment from both. That’s why Linn DS is so exciting. But don't take my word for it, listen for yourself.
